| NOTE: The contents of the DoCDat database have now been transferred to the NHS Information Centre and are available through a separate website - www.icapp.nhs.uk/docdat. The contents here are retained as an archived version of work managed by NCHOD until September 2007."
DoCDat is an information resource for all those involved in clinical audit, clinical governance, health services management and health services research. It provides information about databases containing patient level and administrative data concerned with clinical care in the UK
To access the listings, use the List of Databases or Search links above.
In the Directory you can find information concerning:
- which clinical databases exist in the UK
- a brief description of the area each one covers and how it is managed
- a simple, at-a-glance review of the quality of their data
- contact details of the custodian of each database.
DoCDat enables you to find out rapidly if a database suitable for your needs exists. You can search on a wide number of criteria, ranging from the type of patient, condition or treatment to the geographical area covered.
For each database, you can discover which types of patients are included, what geographical area is covered, and for what time period. Contact details of the person who is the custodian of the database are provided.
In addition, you will find an independent report of the coverage and accuracy of the data held by the database, based on ten standard criteria. This will enable you to determine whether or not the database meets your requirements.

How does DoCDat assess the quality of a database?
DoCDat does not provide the actual data contained within each database. It is up to you to contact the custodian of the database. Each database is subject to its own procedures, rules and regulations for use. The fact that a database is listed on DoCDat does not guarantee that you will be granted access to the data.
WARNING: Whilst we endeavour to validate all the information supplied to us by database custodians, we cannot guarantee the veracity of some items. You must, therefore, check details yourself with database custodians to ensure the data are appropriate for your purpose. We are keen to learn of any concerns you may have regarding any information included in DoCDat as that will help us improve the quality of this website. Contact us at: docdat@lshtm.ac.uk.
